Bobby Spivey

Meet Bobby Spivey, a personal training client who joined Fit Crew in September of 2021. Bobby is extremely hard working and is always willing to try new things, regardless if they come naturally or not. Since joining Fit Crew and working closely with Coach Shannon, Bobby has improved his cardio, spending time and energy perfecting his rowing technique. He’s also built up a strong core, mastering decline sit-ups.

Bobby shows up to the gym ready to work and improve, truly embodying our motto of “bring your best, then make it better”. We’ve been honored to see Bobby transform both inside and out over the last nine months and can’t wait to see where his fitness journey will take him next.

Tell us about yourself

I’m Floridian, born in Central Florida and slowly working my way south over the last three decades. I write software for a living which is not active at all, so a group of coworkers and I would go to the gym for lunch and get a workout almost every day of the week. We did that basically right up until COVID closed everything down.

How did you get started at Fit Crew?

I was working with a physical therapist to deal with a shoulder impingement and he referred me to Fit Crew when we started talking about physical training. It had been a while since I made progress in my fitness goals so it seemed like a good fit, and after several months I’ve made some pretty big strides.

What has been your proudest athletic moment?

There was a moment when I was doing decline bench presses and after I racked the weight I came up on my own like it was the most natural movement. It sounds like a small thing, but I was struggling so hard with the same movement probably a month or so before that moment. So being able to actually see and feel progress really made me feel like putting in the work was worth it.

What’s your favorite exercises? Least favorite?

I love rowing for cardio. It works so many muscles and it really doesn’t take a ton of time to work up a good sweat. It also helps me to see progress because I can see I’m getting farther in the same amount of time as the weeks go on.

Bulgarian split squats are definitely my least favorite. I struggle with the balance, and the muscles around my knees are definitely underdeveloped. At least they’re getting easier as I start to build those basics.

What do you think makes Fit Crew different from other gyms that you have tried in the past

Chain gyms definitely feel like quantity over quality. At Fit Crew I get to feel like a part of a community of people who are there to do work instead of one of a mass of people, and I have access to more equipment for strength training instead of rows of treadmills and a couple of machines.

What do you like to do when you’re not training at Fit Crew?

My friends and I are avid board gamers, so it’s pretty common to spend time on the weekends playing board games together. I’m also big into escape rooms and try to get one in every month or every other month. After work hours I work on side projects off and on to try and build my skills and portfolio.

Tell us a fun fact that we might not already know about you

I actually went to school for Game and Simulation Programming. Part of the senior year project was spending four months with a team of seniors on designing and developing a video game from scratch, and we ended up making a little platformer based on Alice in Wonderland. It’s all software in the end though so I ended up getting a job in application development on my way out of university.
