April Athlete of the Month

Brian Johnson

Meet our athlete of the month, Brian Johnson. Brian. is one of our original clients, and has been with the gym since 2011 - bringing both his family and friends to the gym along the way. Brian is extremely motivated, competitive, and likes to have fun while training. He’s known for challenging others as well as himself and seeing through to the end, without any excuses to hold him back.

Most recently, Brian made serious fitness gains as he both lost body fat and put on muscle mass. This came right in time for his participation along with Don Purvis and Chip Conner at the St. Anthony’s Tri, where the group came 5th in their age division and 17th overall for the relay group.

Congratulations, Brian!

Tell us about yourself.

I was born and raised in Manatee County and am currently the President of Johnson Homes of West Florida. We are .a family-owned custom home building company who has been building homes in Manatee County for almost 50 years now.

My wife’s name is Laura and we have two daughters, Violet and Whitney. You’ve likely seen them all at the gym. We also have a Yorkie named Charlie.

Growing up, I played every sport as a kid but never did anything at the next level; I mainly focused on school. I have a BS in finance from UCF and an MBA from USF.

How did you get started at Fit Crew?

Laura started going to Fit Crew first and then she got me to go to a Saturday class. It’s the likely story where you just have to see what it's all about. Jokingly I called Fit Crew “group fitness” before joining and told Laura that ‘I don't like to do choreography for exercise’. Little did I know that Andrew would push me to the limit that Saturday. From then on, I was hooked.

What has been your proudest athletic moment?

I would say I don't have just one moment....I would say the culmination of all the hard work and dedication over the past years is my proudest moment

What’s your favorite exercise? Least favorite?

My favorite movements are cleans and all types of squats in the HEAVY variety - I prefer smaller sets at heavier weights as opposed to volume work.

My least favorites are pistols, .anything banded, and glute ham raises.

What do you think makes Fit Crew different from other gyms that you’ve tried in the past

Their variety of workouts is the key to success. They do a very good job of mixing it up and not overtraining any one group of muscles throughout each week. Obviously, the other members make it fun too.....we keep each other accountable and push each other to be better each day

What do you like to do when you’re not training at Fit Crew?

I enjoy spending time with the kids at the soccer fields, hanging by the pool with the family, going to the beach, working out, offshore/inshore fishing, classic cars, and sipping on really good tequila

Tell us a fun fact that we might not already know about you.

I'm obsessed with food. I tend to surprise people with how much food I eat and how fast I can put it down.”
