January Athlete of the Month
Amy Bickford-Edlund
Meet our athlete of the month, Amy Bickford-Edlund. Amy joined us a year ago, almost by accident (read the full blog to learn more) and we couldn’t be happier to have her as part of the Fit Crew family.
Amy is an amazing mother and role model to her boy, Aidan, who also comes to the Fit Crew for FitYOUTH. She’s always smiling and is very kind to our trainers and to fellow clients. Outside of the gym Amy selflessly looks out for and cares for others as a teacher - we love seeing her give herself the same amount of attention and care when she comes to work out. Day after day, Amy comes in with focus and dedication, working hard on her nutrition and on our daily workouts. That focus is paying off, as Amy has made amazing progress. We can’t wait to see where else her journey at Fit Crew will take her.
Congratulations, Amy!
Tell us about yourself.
I was born in Leesburg, Florida, but grew up in Collinsville, Illinois which is a small farming town in Southern Illinois, across the river from St. Louis. I'm an only child, so my family is small. I am married and have a 10 year old son who takes kids classes and sometimes works out with me at Fit Crew.
I have been a teacher for 18 years now. I've taught a little bit of everything from Health Ed., Physical Ed., Drivers Ed., 4th Grade, Drop out Prevention, and Social Studies. Currently I am teaching ESE. I joke that I am a jack of all trades, and a master of none.
As far as my athletic background goes, I've always been athletic and competitive. I played soccer starting at 10 years old. The sport has been very good to me as I've experienced and accomplished so much through it. I was awarded a full scholarship to Southern Illinois University Edwardsville for soccer and I played on a variety of other teams from travel club - Olympic development to semi pro. I also played softball, but had to make a decision on one sport to focus on. Still, I enjoy trying pretty much any sport.
How did you get started at Fit Crew?
I brought Aidan to a kids class on a Saturday and happened to be wearing athletic clothes. The next thing I know, Anna Conn has me doing the 9 AM class. I loved it and haven't looked back. That will be 1 year ago at end of this month.
What has been your proudest athletic moment?
That is tough one, there are many. I'd have to say my final collegic game. It was quarterfinals for D2 national championship at Barry University. I scored our only goal, which for me is rare since I was a defender. When I walked off that field, even though we lost the game, I knew that I completed my college athletic career and earned my degree, which was a promise I had made to my parents.
What’s your favorite exercise? Least favorite?
My favorite exercise are back squats
The least favorite would have to be burpees
What do you think makes Fit Crew different from other gyms that you’ve tried in the past
You can be you no matter what level you are at. There are no shows and no games, just genuine people who want to help you become better at whatever it is you want to be better at. Everyone is waiting and willing to walk with you or run with you when you are ready.
What do you like to do when you’re not training at Fit Crew?
Being a Mom!
Tell us a fun fact that we might not already know about you.
In high school I was voted most likely to become a rock star. That was a LONG time ago!! 😉
